چکیده

We present an experimental study on articulation in bowed strings, that provides important elements for a discussion about sound synthesis control. The study focuses on bow acceleration profiles and transient noises, measured for different players for the bowing techniques detaché and martelé. We found that maximum profiles of these profiles are not synchronous, and temporal shifts are dependant on the bowing techniques. These results allow us to bring out important mechanisms in sound and gesture articulation. In particular, the results reveal potential shortcoming of mapping strategies using simple frame by frame procedures of the data stream. We propose instead to consider input control data as time functions, and consider gesture coarticulation processes.

An Approach to Instrument Augmentation: the Electric Guitar

In this paper we describe an ongoing research on augmented instruments, based on the specific case study of the electric guitar. The key question of the relationship between gesture, instrument and sound is approached via an analysis of the electric guitar’s design, playing technique and interface characteristics. The study points out some inherent defaults in the guitar’s current forms of acou...

Discriminating music performers by timbre: On the relation between instrumental gesture, tone quality and perception in classical cello performance

Classical music performers use instruments to transform the symbolic notation of the score into sound which is ultimately perceived by a listener. For acoustic instruments, the timbre of the resulting sound is assumed to be strongly linked to the physical and acoustical properties of the instrument itself. However, rather little is known about how much influence the player has over the timbre o...

Non-invasive sensing and gesture control for pitched percussion hyper-instruments using the Kinect

Hyper-instruments extend traditional acoustic instruments with sensing technologies that capture digitally subtle and sophisticated aspects of human performance. They leverage the long training and skills of performers while simultaneously providing rich possibilities for digital control. Many existing hyper-instruments suffer from being one of a kind instruments that require invasive modificat...

El-Lamellophone A Low-cost, DIY, Open Framework for Acoustic Lemellophone Based Hyperinstruments

The El-Lamellophone (El-La) is a Lamellophone hyperinstrument incorporating electronic sensors and integrated DSP. An embedded Linux micro-computer supplants the laptop. A piezo-electric pickup is mounted to the underside of the body of the instrument for direct audio acquisition providing a robust signal with little interference. The signal is used for electric sound-reinforcement, creative si...

FlexiGesture: A sensor-rich real-time adaptive gesture and affordance learning platform for electronic music control

Acoustic musical instruments have traditionally featured static mappings from input gesture to output sound, their input affordances being tied to the physics of their soundproduction mechanism. More recently, the advent of digital sound synthesizers and electronic music controllers has abolished the tight coupling between input gesture and resultant sound, making an exponentially large range o...
